Imaginação e especulação na filosofia moral de Adam Smith

Apresentação:

Apesar de vários estudos recentes, Adam Smith (1723-1790) ainda é mais conhecido por
sua obra de economia política – Uma investigação sobre a natureza e as causas da
riqueza das nações (1776). Mas é sua primeira grande obra, A teoria dos sentimentos
morais (1ª ed., 1759; 6ª ed., 1790), o objeto desse curso. Nela, o filósofo escocês defende
a tese de que os critérios morais devem ser buscados na sensibilidade, mais
especificamente, no modo como nós, enquanto espectadores de determinados atos,
reagimos de modo mais ou menos espontâneo, aprovando ou desaprovando esses atos.
Sua teoria moral é construída sobre um princípio de aprovação plural, composto por
quatro tipos de juízos morais, a saber, conveniência (propriety), mérito, dever e beleza
outorgada pela aparência de utilidade. Esse princípio, que constitui a parte especulativa
de sua teoria, tem na imaginação o seu fundamento e na simpatia o seu principal
mecanismo (não o único).

Justificativa e objetivo:
Apesar de sua importância histórica, a obra filosófica de Adam Smith ainda é pouco
estudada no Brasil. O objetivo do curso é dar alguns passos nesse sentido através da
apresentação da obra A teoria dos sentimentos morais em sua organização interna e
sistemática, ressaltando-se o modo como Smith mobiliza criticamente certos tópicos e
temas da tradição filosófica, assim como se posiciona (por vezes, não sem polêmica) no
debate de sua época.

9. Fortuna e autoridade: a questão da (des)igualdade
10. Autoengano e dever
11. Justiça I: ressentimento como prolepse
12. Justiça II: regras e suas funções
13. Aparência de utilidade
14. Paixões extravagantes
15. Sistema e especulação
