The course, through the use of the recent argumentation theory approaches, aims to reflect on the role of Roman oratory outside of discourses held in deliberative institutional contexts (senate, public assemblies) or judicial courts, paying particular attention to to the literary works belonging to the historiographical genre (Sallust, Livy) and to the epic (Virgil and Lucan). Students will acquire a greater competence on the perspectives of classical rhetoric from a contemporary point of view and on the ways in which the oratory realizes its aims within different genres. |
