Objetivos:

- Refletir sobre os diferentes estilos de escrita; - analisar as novas temáticas introduzidas pelas escritoras irlandesas contemporâneas, mudanças na linguagem e recepção crítica; - analisar comparativamente narrativas ou discursos que representam o ser fragmentado e os impactos no corpo e no tecido sócio cultural provocados pelos câmbios; - realizar ensaios de escrita criativa.

Justificativa:

O curso parte do ressurgimento da narrativa irlandesa curta e tem por objetivo identificar novos paradigmas para refletir como as novas identidades literárias são moldadas pelos câmbios sócio-culturais. As narrativas televisivas e as mídias sociais influenciam a escrita de ficção em diferentes dimensões, marcando a transformação da narrativa tradicional em narrativa pós-moderna. Além das discussões teóricas, o curso visa, pela primeira vez, realizar “workshops” de escrita criativa e de crítica literária de acordo com os novos parâmetros de recepção crítica.

Conteúdo:

A partir de diferentes exemplos de autores irlandeses, este curso, ministrado em inglês, focalizará a análise de textos literários para refletir os diferentes métodos de escrita criativa. Class 1, Part 1: Timeline of Irish writers between 1920-2019: this will include a broad overview of writing from the past to the present, so I will be touching on names from the past (Frank O'Connor, but moving on to Kate O'Brien and some of the writers censored under Irish law during the mid-20th century, James Plunkett and on to the shift in thinking and in writing styles that occurred from the 1970s onwards). This is to provide some context in fiction for the students. Class 1, Part 2 (a): Discussion of what we mean when we use terms like 'Modernist' and 'post-Modernist'; (b) discussion on the idea of censorship. Even today, when there is no censorship in Ireland, does this mean that certain subjects and agendas are not favoured more than others? Class 2, Part 1: Irish but European: The fiction of William Wall, Eilis Ni Dhuibhne and Mia Gallagher. Class 2, Part 2: Workshop in short fiction. Students will have the opportunity to bring their own writing to the seminar that day. It could be fictional or critical writing according to the discussions of the previous classes. Class 3, Part 1: The Emergence of the Female Voice from the late 70s to the present: we will consider a range of styles and themes/subjects from writers as diverse as Eilis Ni Dhuibnne, Sheila Llewellyn, Lucy Caldwell, as well as Emer Martin (novelist), Belinda McKeon, Nuala O'Connor (Ní Chonchúir). In that context, we'll look at elements of the following short stories and in the case of Emer Martin an excerpt from her fiction (to be photocopied in advance). Themes to be expected: the female experience; sexuality; social class; Irish identity and women's lives; poverty, powerlessness, and the Church in Ireland (Emer Martin). Class 3, Part 2: Continuation of workshop. Class 4, Part 1: Romance and Physicality: from Edna O'Brien, Philip O'Ceallaigh, and June Caldwell, Two very different visions of life, love and the body (photocopied excerpts to be supplied) Class 4, Part 2: Continuation of workshop, readings from students, input, response, discussion . . . Class 5. Part 1: Today's Men: Donal Ryan, Mike McCormick, John Banville, Colm Toibin: 4 visions of Ireland (photocopied excerpts to be supplied). Class 5, Part 2: Final fiction workshop.

Forma de Avaliação:

Participação nos debates gerados pelos textos críticos, literários e artísticos, apresentação de seminários e trabalho final.

Observação:

As aulas serão ministradas em inglês com bibliografia em inglês. Conta com a participação da escritora e professora convidada cujas palestras serão em inglês. O curso será ministrado das 14h às 18h, nos dias 11, 12, 13, 14 e 20 de março de 2019.
