Objectives:
To explain how bioinformatics helps in gaining information about protein structure and function, how this new field is accompanying bioscientists in their daily work particularly in health, and why physical chemistry is extremely valuable to go further in the understanding of protein function. Special attention is given to electrostatic interactions in and between biomolecules. Students are expected to learn how to use available tools and also to write out simpler computational codes.
Justificativa:
Rationale:
Bioinformatics is now routinely used in labs and pharmaceutical companies. Indeed, Bioinformatics and Molecular Modelling give access to a deep knowledge of the protein target, which is required before developing an appropriate drug. Thus, it is important to better know the structural bioinformatics methods and approaches but also to be aware of their limits and intrinsic approximations. This research field is fast advancing which requires a constant updated too. The importance of pH biological, chemical, medical and technological systems is changing several available tools and driven the development of new more realistic approaches for the biomolecular phenomena. Students need to be prepared for this present scenario.
