Objectives:

1) To develop academic writing in English through three types of text: summary, research article and abstract. 2) To understand and adopt the characteristics of academic writing in English, focusing especially on IME’s areas. 3) To enable students to identify the issues in their writing so they can become more autonomous when producing texts. 4) To enable students to read texts in their area in order to search for and identify writing conventions and reproduce them in their texts.

Justificativa:

I. A disciplina será em formato não-presencial, 100% online. II. VI.

Rationale:

With internationalization and graduate students’ participation in international events in their area of study, the need for them to develop academic writing skills in English has increased. Moreover, the presence of international students at IME has also highlighted the need for a discipline in English that focuses on the development of academic writing. I. The discipline will be 100% online. II. The weekly classes will be X hours long and will be offered synchronously through Google Meet or Zoom. The 1-hour tutoring lessons will be offered in the same manner. III. Classes will use Power Point slides, which will be made available to students on e-disciplinas. IV. The interaction between teacher and students will occur during synchonrous classes, tutoring sessions or the Discussion Forum at e-disciplinas. V. Students’ presence in class will be controlled through e-disciplinas. VI. Students will need equipment with a camera and microphone in order to participate in classes and tutoring sessions. VII. Evaluation will be done remotely, through written work which will be submitted by the students. VIII.Students will be considered approved in the discipline if they achieve a grade equal or higher than 6.0 in their written work.

Notes/Remarks:

Students are expected to have an intermediate level of English proficiency in order to appropriately follow the course. Students who hold a certificate of language proficiency must send it to the course coordination at mmferreira@usp.br, for evaluation. Those who do not hold a certificate will go through a proficiency test before the beginning of the course. Students are also expected to have a chosen research topic, to be actively conducting research, or to be writing a research article. The course has different text proposals for students to become familiar with and use the course to write the types of texts expected by their graduate programs.
