Docente Responsável:
Professor:
Gabriel Haeser
Objectives:
To be familiarized with fundamental topics in convexity on the euclidean space and its applications.
Justificativa:
Rationale:
Convex sets and functions have a fundamental role in several areas of mathematics. This course presents an introduction to the main results on this topic and its applications.
Conteúdo:
1. Topologia de conjuntos convexos: dimensão, interior relativo, cone de recessão, tangente e normal. 2. Representação: faces e pontos extremos, teorema de Carathéodory, hiperplano separador, politopos. 3. Cones convexos: Cone de matrizes semidefinidas positivas, cone de segunda ordem.
Content:
1. Topology of convex sets: dimension, relative interior, recession, tangent and normal cones. 2. Representation: faces and extreme points, Carathéodory theorem, separating hyperplane, polytopes. 3. Convex cones: cone of positive semidefinite matrices, second order cone.
Type of Assessment:
The evaluation will be carried out through seminars, projects and tests. The final grade will be calculated by the arithmetic mean M of the means obtained by the student in each assessment instrument. In the first two weeks of class, the teacher will set the dates and number of tests, projects and seminars, as well as the criteria for attributing the final letter grade.
