Objectives:

Establish a first contact of the student with Logic and present some of its applications in other areas of Mathematics.

Justificativa:

Rationale:

It is not hard to find graduated students in Mathematics with lack of knowledge on a basic level in Logic and Foundations of Mathematics. This situation tends to limit the understanding and the possible use of model-theoretical or set-theoretical methods in the main area of interest of the student. It is emphasized that such methods have proven increasingly useful and present in the solution of mathematical problems in the areas of Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Analysis and Topology

Conteúdo:

Content:

0. Preliminary discussion on Paradoxes and Foundations of Mathematics. 1. The classical propositional calculus: syntax and semantics (connective generators); main theorems (of normal forms, of deduction, of soundness and of completeness); Lindenbaum algebra. 2. The classical first- order predicate calculus: first-order formalized languages; the notion of structure, of satisfiability relation (tarski’s definition of truth); axioms and inference rules; the main theorems (of deduction, of prenex-form, of soundness). 3. Notions of Model Theory: the method of constants and the theorem of completeness; the main theorems (of Lós, of compactness, of Löwenheim-Skolem); applications in Mathematics. 4. Notions of recursive functions: algorithms; Gödel's incompleteness theorems. 5. Free topics and seminars subjects: Proof Theory (sequent calculus, natural deduction); infinitary and higher-order logic; non-classical logics (intuitionistic); Abstract model theory (Lindström’s theorems), etc.
