Objectives:
The goal of the course is to introduce the student to the structure theory of rings
Justificativa:
Rationale:
Modules are essential objects in the study of structure theory of rings. In this course we present basic module theory and some of its applications.
Conteúdo:
1-Módulos, sub-módulos, homomorfismos, independência linear, produtos, quocientes, somas diretas. Teoremas de isomorfismo. Ideais a esquerda e a direita.
Content:
1- Modules, submodules. homomorphisms, linear independence, direct product, quotient modules, direct sum. Isomorphism theorems. Left and right ideals. 2- Artinian and Noetherian rings and modules. Finite length modules. Theorems of Jordan-Holder and Fitting. Semisimple rings and modules. Wedderburn-Artin theorem. Krull-Schmidt Theorem. 3- Exact sequences. Free modules. Projective modules. Injective modules. 4- At the teacher's discretion at least one of the following two blocks will be covered: A) Principal ideal domains. Diagonalization of matrices under equivalence. Invariant factors. Structure Theorem for finitely generated modules over principal ideal domains. Application to abelian groups and modules over K[x] (Jordan form of a linear operator). B) Jacobson radical, Nakayama's Lemma, nilradical of a ring.
Type of Assessment:
The evaluation will be carried out through seminars, projects and tests. The final grade will be calculated by mean obtained by the student in the assessment instrument. In the first two weeks of class, the teacher will set the dates and number of tests, projects and seminars, as well as the criteria for attributing the final letter grade.
