The elective course of International Veterinary Medicine (1 credit), proposed in the 2018 FMVZ Academic Project, aims to foster discussion on topics related to Global Health, where the participation of veterinarians is essential, in addition to encouraging our students to participate in exchange programs. It also aims to expand the list of institutions abroad that can receive our students, and identify mechanisms for financing these programs. The course aims to promote meetings between exchange students and those aspiring to the exchange program, aiming to improve it.
1: Introduction to Global Health - Topics: Concepts of Global Health, the role of veterinarians in global public health, zoonoses and impacts on animal and human health. - Activity: Group discussion on examples of veterinarians' work in global health crises. 2: Veterinary Medicine and Academic Exchange - Topics: Importance of academic exchange in the training of global veterinarians, available exchange programs. - Activity: Presentation of cases of students who participated in exchange programs. 3: International Institutions and Organizations - Topics: Organizations that work in Global Health (WHO, OIE, FAO, etc.), possible partnerships with universities and international institutions. - Activity: Mapping and discussion of international institutions of interest to students. 4: Funding and Scholarship Opportunities - Topics: Funding mechanisms for exchanges, scholarships and government and private aid. - Activity: Workshop on seeking funding and preparing applications for exchange scholarships. 5: International Veterinary Medicine in Action - Topics: Presentation of cases of veterinarians on international missions, such as pandemics and global veterinary emergencies. - Activity: Special guest, such as a veterinarian who served on an international mission, for discussion with students. 6: Preparation for the Exchange - Topics: Preparations for exchange, cultural and academic, differences between educational systems. - Activity: Discussion circle between students who have already been on exchange and those who are preparing for it. 7: Improvement of Exchange Programs - Topics: Feedback from exchange students, suggestions for improving the exchange process. - Activity: Collaborative report with suggestions for improving the exchange process at the institution. 8: Assessment and Closing - Topics: Discussion on the results of the classes, points for improvement for future editions of the course. - Activity: Presentation of final papers with proposals for improvements or new exchange projects.
