This course provides a multidisciplinary forum to discuss the impact of bioinformatics applied to life sciences. Students will learn about the latest technologies of the field, current progress, and will be trained in performing his/her own genomic data analyses. No computational or mathematical background is required. It is an exploratory course with emphases on development of basic bioinformatics skills, visualization, and solution of biological problems. As such, it is designed primarily for health science students interested on the application of bioinformatics as a scientific tool.

This course highlights the recent technological and methodological advances in life sciences and shows how bioinformatics can be applied to (1) investigate the molecular mechanisms underneath cellular processes and to (2) predict the behavior of biological systems. All activities, lectures and discussions involved in this course will be in English. Conteúdo Teórico 1. Complexity of biological systems; 2. Modern high‐throughput "omics" tools and databases; 3. Bioinformatics applied to Life Sciences; 4. Personalized medicine; 5. Systems biology; 6. Blood transcriptomics; 7. Introduction to Linux and programming; 8. Web tools and databases; 9. Predictive modeling applied to personalized medicine; 10. Challenges and limitations. Conteúdo Prático 1. Introduction to Linux 2. Introduction to Perl 3. Introduction to R 4. Webtools and databases
1) Método de Ensino: Lectures/seminars for the classes; and hands-on training for homework assignments. 2) Método de Avaliação: Fifty percent of the grade is for properly completing homework assignments. The remaining 50% of the grade will come from a seminar presented by the student.
Final grade >= 5.0; presence in class >= 70%
Norma de Recuperação
Final grade between 3.0 and 4.9; presence in class >= 70%. The grade for this exam will come from a written report provided by the student about selected topic.
