THIS COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT ENTIRELY IN ENGLISH. It is expected that the undergraduate students develop competency in the activities covering the development and characterization of nanostructures aiming to obtain innovative products. The discipline will also allow the student to acquire skills in the preparation of different nanostructures. In addition, current regulations and the ethical aspects of nanotechnology applied to health sciences will be discussed.
Basic definitions: nanoscience and nanotechnology. Development and characterization of matrix and non-matrix nanostructures. Industrial scale methods in the manufacturing of nanostructured systems. Regulatory and ethical aspects of nanotechnology. Modified drug and bioactive release systems: opportunities and challenges.
Theoretical: 1. Definitions and fundamentals: nanoscience and nanotechnology; 2. Properties of nanometer-scale materials: quantum confinement effects, properties due to size and surface effects; 3. Techniques of preparation of nanostructures (ascending and descending); 4. Techniques of physical-chemical and morphological characterization of nanostructures; 5. Regulatory and ethical aspects of nanotechnology applied to health sciences; 6. Innovation, patent and intellectual property. Laboratory: 1. Preparation and physical-chemical characterization of nanostructured lipid systems; 2. Preparation and physical-chemical characterization of nanocrystals of poorly soluble drugs in water.
