A partir de recorte eclético das abordagens teóricas de economia internacional (microeconômica, estruturalista), de sociologia do trabalho (reestruturação produtiva no âmbito da mudança de paradigma Fordista e Pós-fordista), de relações internacionais (institucionalismo, neorealismo), a disciplina tem como objetivos trazer à discussão as grandes questões que circundam o tema das relações de trabalho de uma perspectiva global.
Um dos temas mais controversos a respeito do processo de globalização (política, econômica e social) diz respeito aos impactos sobre os mercados de trabalho (nível de emprego e renda), as relações de trabalho (processos e atores “globais” – empresas, governos e sindicatos), a dinâmica das redes de produção transnacionais (deslocalização a partir dos conceitos de Cadeia Produtiva, Cadeia de Valor, Redes de Produção Globais), a dimensão estratégica dos atores envolvidos (a negociação, a cooperação e o conflito), o papel das Instituições Internacionais (o perfil institucional, as regras e normas “globais”, os mecanismos de “controle” sobre as multinacionais e o seu enforcement), e as diferentes abordagens teóricas para a mudança social e econômica dos sistemas de produção (Fordismo, Pós-fordismo).
